The
Best of Steve Smith
An electrifying
collection of some of Steve’s favorite tracks taken from the 14
albums that he played on and produced for the Tone Center label.
This collection
features extensive liner notes by Steve and incendiary playing from
a diverse cast of characters: Scott Henderson, Victor
Wooten, Frank Gambale, Stu Hamm, Larry Coryell,
Tom Coster, Jerry Goodman, Howard Levy,
Oteil Burbridge, Steve Marcus, Andy Fusco,
Anthony Jackson, Kai Eckhardt, Baron Browne,
Mark Soskin, Aydin Esen and David Liebman.
“When I was 12 years
old and started listening to the amazing Buddy Rich I bought some
recently released compilations of his earlier work, which to me was
all new music. It made me aware of his extensive body of work and as
a result I dug deeper into Buddy’s catalogue. I hope that my Tone
Center ‘Best Of’ collection serves to introduce my playing to a new
generation of music fans who have currently become interested in
high-level musicianship, challenging compositions, virtuosic playing
and spontaneous, interactive communication between musicians. They
may have been too young to appreciate sophisticated music when this
music was originally recorded but now they are ready for a new
listening experience. For my long-time fans that may not have heard
all of the Tone Center releases that I was involved in, this
collection serves as a high-energy sampler of some of the best
tracks from this very creative period.” - - Steve Smith, 2009

The
Best of GHS
“The
jazz-rock-fusion trio GHS - with Frank Gambale on
guitar, Stu Hamm and myself, Steve Smith, on drums - was one
of Tone Center Records' hardest-hitting, high-energy groups. At a
time when many labels were interested in promoting ‘smooth jazz,’
GHS addressed the music fans that were being ignored: fans that
wanted to hear angular melodies, gnarly tones, dense harmonies,
intricate rhythms, daring improvisation and group interplay with a
‘more is more’ credo! Taken from our three releases, Show Me What
You Can Do, The Light Beyond and GHS3, The Best
Of GHS offers some of our finest compositions and performances
along with solo statements from each band member. Handle with care.”
- Steve Smith, 2009

FLASHPOINT This
all-star project brings together four potent and highly respected
players -- Steve Smith, Dave Liebman, Aydin Esen
and Anthony Jackson -- whose paths have crossed before in
various configurations over the years. As a unit, they
authoritatively straddle the worlds of freewheeling jazz
improvisation and kinetic, rock-fueled intensity on Flashpoint,
which takes no prisoners and makes no apologies for its full-out
fuzoid tendencies...

Count's
Jam Band: Reunion
A reunion of '60s
Jazz/Rock pioneers Larry Coryell (guitar) and Steve Marcus
(soprano sax). Steve (The Count) Marcus had an early jazz/rock
project he dubbed Count’s Rock Band which featured his friend
Larry Coryell. Steve Smith, who was recording and gigging with
both Larry and Steve Marcus (with Buddy’s Buddies), got them back
together and produced this exceptional recording, recreating and
expanding on the magic that occurred when Larry and Steve played
together. Rounding out the quartet is Kai Eckhardt on bass
(Summit, Garaj Mahal) and on a few numbers, Jeff Chimenti (Ratdog),
on keys.

The
Stranger's Hand
This one-time
meeting of kindred musical spirits -- drummer Steve Smith,
violinist Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu Orchestra), bassist Oteil
Burbridge (Allman Bros.) and keyboardist/harmonica wonder Howard
Levy (Flecktones) -- is an explosion of kinetic forces barely
contained in the microgrooves of this CD.
