Drum Legacy - Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
by Steve Smith

A key concept of learning to play music is to assimilate the vocabulary, concepts, and techniques of earlier generations of musicians, in order to understand how the musical language of today evolved. This is especially true for jazz drumming.

The “giants” of jazz drumming assimilated the innovations of the generations before them, and they were then able to build on these ideas, in order to contribute new concepts to language of jazz drumming. In my new Hudson Music DVD, "Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy – Standing on the Shoulders of Giants," this idea is explored.

The program includes a one-hour live performance with my group, Jazz Legacy, from the 2006 Modern Drummer Festival. The music that we played at the concert: "A Night In Tunisia," "Three Card Molly," "Two Bass Hit," "Sister Cheryl," and more, was inspired by and associated with some of my favorite jazz drummers, including: Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones and Tony Williams. As drummers, we are all “Standing on the Shoulders” of these musical giants, these are some of the drummers that laid the foundation of not only jazz drumming, but all genres modern drumming.

There is a two-hour analysis and demonstration of many of the ideas that I played at the concert, and the various drum solos I performed in the studio. This is accomplished with the assistance of John Riley – master jazz drummer, educator and author. John and I discuss how studying the giants of jazz drumming has impacted us. The discussion is full of insightful observations and clear demonstrations to help viewers gain a deeper understanding of jazz drumming.

Also included in the package is a new, "Live On Tour," CD from my group Jazz Legacy, taken from performances during a recent west coast tour. The bonus material includes bios of the jazz drummers discussed, a viewing and listening guide for students of jazz drumming -- written by respected author/drummer Mark Griffith -- and various transcriptions of my demonstrations.

The information is presented to aid in the development and extension of the tradition of jazz drumming. The double DVD is five hours long plus the Live On Tour Jazz Legacy CD. List price will be $39.95.

This video will be available in the Steve Smith Store soon!
